I feel that this process is going to quickly approach me and I will be very stressed. I do know what I want to do, I just need to figure out the main questions and how I want to write it up.
Since I will be in a classroom that has a diverse group, I will need to make sure that I can help all students.
I think that photograph and learning will be a great tool for my students with special needs. I will have the students complete the photography and allow them to have ownership in what they use to describe the words.

Week 1 Reflections
First week in high school started out very different from my elementary school. Hearing all of the different bells were so confusing. I was not sure what class was what and when we were going to change classes. Overall, I was simply nervous. After talking with my teacher my nerves turned into excitement. I was excited to start teaching my students. I have also learned a great deal about administration duties. My teacher has taught me so much about the IEP's and the special education process. High school exposes you more to the IEPs since they are more intense and the difficulty level increases.
I feel that I have made great strives with the high school students, I opened the day with each class and try to see what they did last night or if they have anything that they can share. I have students wanting to talk with me and they feel that they can share things, which makes me feel better about being in high school.
I have the best teacher, she is so caring and wants to help me learn and grow as a teacher. I am very lucky to be with her and her students.
Some of the strength of my year four portfolio were my action research, I feel that I truly understood the different aspects of the research.
For my fifth year portfolio I am planning on show the variety of characteristics that I have exhibited in my high school placement as well as my elementary. Through this experience I plan to show how I have grown in my ability to teach.

Week 2 Reflections
This week has gone really well. I have been teaching full time. This week we have gotten into the Read 180 program as well as the civics book.
The schools management system has improved based on communicating with my teaching. I feel that my teacher's classroom has good management. There is an understanding between my teacher and her students about having respect. I feel that my students have the respect for me and the other students that is need for them to have the best education. The students get a long very well.
Today, September 1, 2010, I had a students that was constantly talking. I could not get him to understand that it is important to be quiet. He was very happy today, but could not get him to understand that he needed to be quiet. He was argueing with me today, but he was doing it in a joking manner. I feel that it was good, because he felt that he could talk and joke with me. Other than that I feel that the day went well.
Civics is something new for me to teach, but I feel that I am learning as I am planning my lessons.

Week 3 Reflections
This week was midterm for Special Education interns. I have had a great experience with this school and the students. I have learned so much about special education and myself.
Something that I have learned about myself would have to be my ability to keep control over high school students, even when the class is not my class. Today, September 9, 2010 I had to cover a class for another teacher. I found that it was a very difficult class. They did not want to listen to me, nor did they respect me. I felt very helpless and confused because I was not sure of her rules or how things are ran. I wanted them to complete tasks without being defiant. I had students constantly not listen to me and put their head down. I felt that this was something that was an uphill battle, there was no way they were going to really listen to me. When I had a discussion with them about needing to read and follow directions the students said things that were very frightening. I was very shock to hear some of these life long plans. I did however hold my ground, I continued to monitor the students, I made sure that I let them know that I would be sharing the information their teacher. They were not phased by this, but they did understand that it was not okay to "walk over me" because I am a student teacher.
Part of my experience has given me experience that I need to gain first hand. I could read from a text book for several days, but wont be as meaningful.
The state department came to the school this week and I learned a lot of rules that need to be followed to make the school an effective environment for students.
Throughout these weeks I have been working very closely with my teacher and the counselors and other teachers to make sure that all of the students are in the classes that they need to be. I feel that this has given me a great insight on how the school system runs.
Overall, my first week of lessons written by me, has went really well. I started research with my civics class and they really are getting the hang of research. I have made modifications as we are going so that they will have the best opportunities to learn.
The English and reading classes are coming together. We are finding the reading levels and interest of the students so we can get into the programs more.
I feel that this program is really going to be helpful for these students. I am sad that I wont get to see some of the progress of the students, but I am sure that there will be great strives with some of the students reading and language art skills.

Week 4 Reflections
This was the fourth week at my high school placement. I have been enjoying working with the high school students. This week I continued to write the lesson plans and I found that they flowed rather well. I felt that the lesson could have parts that would have went better. I did notices that the students were struggling with part of the lesson on Monday so I decided to change the lesson for the following day and do a differentiated lesson. I felt that this was something that helped the students. I saw a difference in the students after completing this task. Also I had the students do a writing process, within this writing process I learned that they have a difficult time figuring out the different ideas and processes. The students wanted me to tell them what to write and how to write it. I decided that since they were having such a hard time with this that on Monday of the next week they would be working on some more writing so that they would get more practice. I am excited to see how they respond to the writing prompt.
My other classes went well. I worked with the student on completing the research project. On Friday, the students presented the information. I found that they did learn something from the other projects as well as from their projects. Since September 17, was the Constitution day, I did a presentation on the history of this document. They really liked the PowerPoint and video that I showed them.
I feel that sometimes I am not sure how to teach the information to the students. I think that this will be something that will come the more I teach. I think that I need to trust the things that I know and share them to the best of my abilities.

Week 5 Reflections
This is the last week at my high school placement. I am very sad to leave my students and the great friends that I have made over the short five weeks. My mentor teacher has given me so much. She has taught me so much about the Special Education in the high school setting. I feel that I could teach high school when I graduate. I never thought I could say that. I also have had some great learning opportunities. I found that writing when made fun can be very helpful to the students.
I look forward to working on the lessons with my students in the next three days. Its very hard to believe that this placement is over, it seems just as I got started I have to leave. I think that it would be better to have the high school placement for Special Education to be longer. You really can't get a good understanding in such a short time.
I have learned so much about myself as a teacher. I can't wait to get the opportunity Over the last few days at high school my lessons went well and I could see that the students learned from what I was teaching them. They had a great attitude and were willing to work on the final projects that I had the students do. I think that it shows that they respected me as a teacher. From day one, I was not sure that I would have all of the students show me respect.
There was one day, where a student was not listening to me and was very disrespectful. After the whole situation, the student had enough respect to explain himself to me and my mentor teacher. Also he apologized to me for not showing me the respect I deserved.
All of my students worked with me to finalize their work. As they finished their work, they saw why I was having them work on the papers and projects so much. The learned a lot and it was a great experience for both the students and me.

Week 6 Reflections
This was the first week back from high school to elementary school. The transition back to elementary school was not a hard as I thought it was going to be. I really thought it was going to be a lot harder than it was, I was able to get right back into the swing of things.
This week I just observed and got to know the children. I also sent home my parent letter introducing myself to them. I think this is important to do so that they understand more of what is going on in the classroom.
ACTION RESEARCH
I have started the Action Research process. I have gotten my research approved with my school and will start the process of how things will work on Monday. This will be my time to find out the level of my students.
I have determined the number of students that I am going to collect the data from. MY students that I am going to work with are in the second and first grade. I will be working more with the lower level group. Since the groups are already set up I will keep the groups. Both groups will participate but I will only focus on the first group that I will be working with.

Week 7 Reflection
This past week at Blackshere has been very interesting. I finised my assessment of the students sight word knowledge. I found that on average most of the students only knew a few. I found a pattern of words that the students knew were color words, and or number words.
For my lessons I have found a great way to organize myself and my lessons. My teacher really liked it and is going to use my template that I made for my lesson. Having been back to elementary school for a couple weeks I am starting to get back into the routine of Elementary.
This week I have been teaching the morning and afternoon small groups. I have really gotten to know the students. I feel that they are getting to know me and are willing to work with me more and more.
This upcoming week I will be taking on more classes. I look forward to try some new ideas for classroom management. I have a class of boys, that will not do thier work without talking and distracting the other students. They have not been responding to the other rewards so I am going to try to set up a chart where they have to be responsible to gain thier reward.

Week 8 Reflections
This past week was very good,I felt that I have made some great connections with my students. They are willing to come to me for help. This past week I was teaching the morning work, reading-action research, alternative math for the fourth grade, math with kindergarten, and sidewalks. This was a great group of kids to work with and I felt that they gain deeper understanding from the lessons. One of the most frustrating things of this week would have to be the students I work with in the afternoon. This would be the kindergarten and sidewalk students. I feel that they just do not care. I am having a hard time motivating the students to participate and listen to the different activities within the lesson.
Last week was the first week of my behavioral plan with the fourth graders, I was afraid that they would not response to the approach I was taking with the students. The students did response to the reward system. I am using the weekly chart to graph their rewards, if the students reach 12 sticks at the end of the week then they will be allowed to complete the computer game. This game is based around the math concepts that they are working on for that week. Many of the students were sad when they got a stick removed, which showed me that the sticks had some meaning. At the end of the week, all students have reached the goal.
This was a great week, and I feel that this upcoming week will be exciting, I look forward to working more with my action research.
When I talked with my mentor teacher, she has given me some great ideas of how to find some of my data as well as how to set up the different assessments. When I was working on the first day of photography I found that I could not allow the students to complete independent work. This became a problem so I am not planning to have seat work such as connecting the dots, or game which my teacher can help me out while I am working with the students one on one. The students will work as a whole groups when we review the words and all of the different activities. I feel that this will be a better plan than trying to work on the activities on a one on one bases.

Week 9 Reflections
This week was a great week, I made some changes to my action research in the hopes to reach the students needs more. I found that since there was only fifteen minutes to work with the students that it would be better to decided on the total words that I am wanting the children to gain. Therefore, I feel that this will be a better approach for my action research.
Also this week has been very crazy! We had different schedules all week which makes it hard to keep track of all of the different activities I have planned. Throughout the week, I was able to get many of the activities accomplished, just in a different way than planned. When working with my students, I found that my behavior plan did have some effect on the students behaviors; however, I found that the students did not act the way I hoped they would. This coming Monday, will tell if the students will change their actions since two of the students did not get the reward for this week.

Week 10 Reflections
Week 10 at my internship, I have found that Special Education is truly what I want to do in the future. I have found that my lessons are truly helping the students. This week was Halloween week at my school, which has really made the week go quickly.
This week I had all of the classes except the reading class and the first grade math. I made sure to watch all of the different things that my teacher did during these times. I found that the best way to write my lesson plans for the next week would be to follow the lesson format that my teacher uses. Since my students are used to a routine I did not want to change the classes.
After talking with my teacher, we decided that the students need a different kind of spelling test. This would help them gain more knowledge and be more beneficial to the students needs.
For action research this week, I completed the books with the students and we were using the books to complete activities. I have learned that my students are benefiting more from having the words present with the picture. I feel that they are really gaining some exposure to the words and it is helpful. When putting the books together, I asked the students to tell me which of the words were represented in the pictures, of the students most of the students were able to pick them out with out any issues. The ones that gave the students the hardest time would have to be the ones that were more abstract. Overall, I really think this approach to the project will be more beneficial and I will see results more quickly.
On Friday, we had the party and it was a lot of fun.

Week 11 Reflections
This past week went very fast, I was able to see real progress in my action research. When testing my participants I saw that the students have really gained understanding of the sight words. I was so excited to see that when my student was just looking at the word, she was able to say the word and was not relying on the picture.
This is the first time that I have worked with touch math, I was not sure of how it would work with the students and thought that it might be hard for me to teach in a different manner than how I learned. When I started with it I thought it was interesting, but after have the students work with it for over a week, can see how it is helpful for the students and how it helps them find the values of the coin. The only problem I have with touch math is that the students are having a hard time determining the difference between the coins. So I plan to start using songs and chants to help the students learn the difference between the coins.
The reading and spelling was something that I was looking forward to teach, I found it was something very difficult. With Math I can guide them easier and I don't feel that I am giving the answers, with spelling and reading I do. It is taking me a while to find the balance of helping and what they need to get the information.
Overall, I feel that we had a great week and I have learned a lot about my teaching and what I can do to help the students. Making reading tests are very difficult to make so that you are sure to test based on the story and challenging enough, but attainable for the student.

Week 12 Reflections
This week I continued to work on completing the lesson plans and working on action research. I have found that the action research is going really well. I feel that the students are responding to the strategy. Throughout this process I felt that some of the students were gaining more from this process because of their attitudes. Other students I felt were having problems at home or something because they had become very defiant and did not want to work.
The different lessons that were taught during this week all went well. There are a couple things that I might have changed to make more of a difference for the students. I would have given them more manipulative to complete the math. We were working with money and it is a hard concept for the students. I want to help the students also with recognizing the different coins.
When working with the reading and spelling lessons, I felt that there was a big difference from the previous week to this week. I felt so much more confident about what I was planning to do and how I wanted to get to the final goal. When writing the different lessons for spelling, I decided to add the use of technology into the lessons. The students really enjoyed working with the computers and I found that it was very helpful for the students. Not only does it help with the students spelling, but helps with the coordination with typing.
When I told the kids that we were going to be using the computers they were so excited. They rarely get to use the computers. This was a key reason I wanted to have the work with it more. I think that it can really help the students and they should be allowed to use it.
When wring the different questions for the Reading test, I found that I was able to connect it back to the story more than the week before. I think it was because of the different type of story it was and allowed for simple questions.
I was very sad, when I had the questions so basic that one of the students still missed the question. My teacher explained to me that it happens and that the students wont always get things right and it will be okay. A large problem is that they are not focus and are easily distracted.
One of the most challenging things that I have experiences during this internship would have to be one of the students behavior. This student is having issues with is how to handle his out burst while still maintaining composure and the other student's behavior. I fear that the students lose out on their learning when this student gets out of hand. This will be an on going process and I will have to learn as we go.
Action Research, the results during this week four the students results are showing progress.
Student scores are 13, 12, 13, and 8. The schedule has remained the same and we are working with the different words and the students are enjoying their books.
This was a confusing week, we had to condense the action research time to Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays since I was not having enough time to complete the activities. I felt very rushed during this time.
The first time that we changed this I felt that I had so much more time to work with the students and really give them the time they needed.
This was also one of the first times assessing after the new strategy. The students responded so much better to this method and I am glad I changed.
This is why it is important to assess as you are teaching because you learn so much about the kids and the things that work for them and what does not.

Week 13 Reflections
This week was the week that we had the unit review and I had a moment that almost changed my idea about teaching. Things were very stressful this week and I really thought this would be alright with my teacher missing two days. Well, Monday and Tuesday were fine. Wednesday was a day like no other. I have never felt so helpless. I had to watch one of the student that was given me issues, mainly behavior issues. This student was not mean or violent to a degree he just couldn't control himself. I found that it was very difficult to get the work done when you have a student that is wanting to take off. It is very hard when you have the student running and you have to leave the classroom and not get to teach the other students. That was one of the hardest things for me. I really want to teach the different students rather than chase one student.
Overall, I had to take a step back and understand that this student cannot control it and it something that you have to deal. As a teacher I can't give up on the kids and I have to make the best of every kids.
Also this week was a great week for Action Research. I learned a lot about the students, I started to pick up on the students learning style. I found that two of my students are having problems transferring the information from the books to a piece of paper. I found that when I cover the picture and left the words, the students were able to read the words.
Also I found that the student who was struggling the most was having the most issues in the classroom overall. I think the two are related.

Week 14 Reflections
This was a very short week, we had our different Thanksgiving activities and completed different lessons that helped to tie back to the theme. This week we worked with the students doing different mental math worksheets with the students. I also had the students working a lot with the different websites that had Thanksgiving games. The students enjoyed it.
This week for action research was the week that I completed the final tests. I found some great progress and I see how the students did over the whole project.
