This past week went very fast, I was able to see real progress in my action research. When testing my participants I saw that the students have really gained understanding of the sight words. I was so excited to see that when my student was just looking at the word, she was able to say the word and was not relying on the picture.
This is the first time that I have worked with touch math, I was not sure of how it would work with the students and thought that it might be hard for me to teach in a different manner than how I learned. When I started with it I thought it was interesting, but after have the students work with it for over a week, can see how it is helpful for the students and how it helps them find the values of the coin. The only problem I have with touch math is that the students are having a hard time determining the difference between the coins. So I plan to start using songs and chants to help the students learn the difference between the coins.
The reading and spelling was something that I was looking forward to teach, I found it was something very difficult. With Math I can guide them easier and I don't feel that I am giving the answers, with spelling and reading I do. It is taking me a while to find the balance of helping and what they need to get the information.
Overall, I feel that we had a great week and I have learned a lot about my teaching and what I can do to help the students. Making reading tests are very difficult to make so that you are sure to test based on the story and challenging enough, but attainable for the student.
